How Endress+Hauser helps dairy processors meet PMO compliance

Dairy processors must meet strict standards outlined in the Pasteurized Milk Ordinance (PMO) and Low Acid Food Guidelines (21 CFR Part 113) to ensure food safety and regulatory compliance. These standards require precise monitoring and documentation of temperature, flow velocity and differential pressure—especially in HTST, UHT and aseptic systems. Endress+Hauser provides a complete suite of instrumentation and software solutions designed to meet these requirements while improving operational efficiency.

Endress+Hauser’s Proline Promag H 100/300/500 electromagnetic flowmeters are FDA-compliant for meter-based timing systems. These devices measure flow velocity directly, which is essential for HTST, UHT and aseptic systems. They replace traditional timing pumps and interface with Safety Flow Limit Recorders (SFLR) to regulate product flow and trigger diversion when necessary.

The Promag H series also includes Heartbeat Technology for diagnostic, verification and monitoring functionalities and can be equipped with locking kits to meet regulatory seal requirements. M-b letters (379, 380 and 381) confirm their compliance with PMO standards.

Temperature monitoring is critical in pasteurization. The iTHERM CompactLine TM311 RTD temperature element exceeds PMO response time requirements with its ultra-fast, tip-sensitive thin film RTD element. It offers an M12 tamper seal for regulatory compliance.

Outside of the pasteurization process, QuickNeck technology allows for fast recalibration, saving up to 20 minutes per measuring point—an important advantage in high-throughput environments.

Maintaining positive pressure on the pasteurized side of the regenerator is essential to prevent contamination. Endress+Hauser uses Cerabar PMP43 and PMP55 pressure transmitters with tamper-proof seals. These transmitters send data to the Memograph M RSG45 data manager, which calculates differential pressure in real time.  As an added level of safety, a diversion can be triggered on a sensor fault.

This integrated approach eliminates the need for a separate differential pressure controller, simplifying installation and improving reliability.

The Memograph M RSG45, paired with Field Data Manager (FDM) software, provides secure, CFR 21 Part 11-compliant data recording via locally maintained files. The system supports annotation, review and approval workflows. Operators can log in via RFID badge or username/password and supervisors can access records remotely for review and validation.

This system streamlines recordkeeping and supports compliance with PMO and FDA regulations.

Endress+Hauser also supports level and pressure control in balance tanks and flash coolers. Instruments like the Deltapilot FMB50 and Deltabar FMD71/72 are designed to handle rapid temperature changes and vacuum conditions. For point-level detection, Liquiphant FTL33 and Liquipoint FTW33 offer reliable performance.

These tools ensure stable operation and accurate readings across a wide range of dairy applications, including ESL, juice and egg pasteurization, CIP/COP systems and retort processing.

All relevant M-b letters, certificates and manuals are available on Endress+Hauser’s website. Navigate to the product page and select “Certificates” under the Documents/Manuals section.

Endress+Hauser’s thermal processing solutions help dairy processors meet regulatory requirements with confidence. From flow and temperature to pressure and data management, these tools are engineered for compliance, reliability and ease of use—helping protect product quality, ensure food safety and optimize operations.
